A recent study conducted by MyChoice, a leading Canadian insurtech company, has ranked Brantford as the most dangerous city for drivers in Ontario. Based on data from over 150,000 car insurance quotes collected since 2020, the study assessed accident and infraction rates to score cities on a scale of 0 to 5. Brantford, with a score of just 0.7, emerged as the highest-risk area in the province.

The study employed a detailed methodology that prioritized accidents (70%) over infractions (30%), such as distracted driving and speeding, to gauge overall road safety. The findings place Brantford alongside Kingston, also scoring 0.7, and slightly below Burlington (0.8) and Brampton (1.1), all of which were identified as challenging cities for drivers.

In stark contrast, larger metropolitan areas like Toronto (4.5), North York (4.2), and East York (4.2) ranked as the safest, demonstrating significantly lower rates of accidents and infractions. Experts attribute the disparity between large urban centers and mid-sized cities to differences in road infrastructure, traffic management, and driver behavior.

As Ontario grapples with its deadliest year for highway collisions since 2007, the findings highlight the need for urgent action to address road safety. MyChoice CEO, Aren Mirzaian, underscores the importance of proactive measures:

“One major recommendation that we have for Ontario drivers is to get winter tires. Not only will this make driving much safer for people on the roads this winter, but it’s also a smart financial decision. You can get a 5% discount on your car insurance rates in Ontario with many insurers for using them. At MyChoice, we encourage drivers to take proactive steps like this to improve road safety and optimize their insurance savings.”

Ontario operates under a no-fault insurance system, meaning fault determinations do not impact coverage but can affect premiums. For drivers in high-risk cities like Brantford, maintaining a clean driving record is essential for managing insurance costs.

MyChoice aims to raise awareness of these rankings to encourage safer driving habits across the province. In addition to equipping vehicles with winter tires, drivers are urged to remain vigilant and adhere strictly to traffic laws.

Brantford’s ranking serves as a wake-up call for residents and city officials alike. By addressing local safety challenges and implementing infrastructure improvements, the city can strive toward reducing accidents and ensuring safer roads for all.
