Prime Minister Justin Trudeau convened a virtual First Ministers’ Meeting today to discuss Canada-U.S. relations, focusing on strengthening border security and addressing shared challenges such as illicit drugs and illegal migration. The meeting marked the second such gathering dedicated to the critical bilateral relationship, underscoring the importance of collaboration among federal, provincial, and territorial leaders.

Trudeau highlighted the significance of the Canada-U.S. border as a cornerstone of economic prosperity and security for both nations. With nearly $3.6 billion in goods and services traded daily, the border facilitates an unparalleled economic partnership. Yet, the Prime Minister noted that risks, particularly from the flow of illicit drugs like fentanyl and illegal migration, demand coordinated action.

In the meeting, the Prime Minister outlined Canada’s plans to enhance border security through targeted measures aimed at disrupting the flow of fentanyl and preserving the integrity of immigration systems. Premiers from across the country expressed support for a unified approach, agreeing to advance federal, provincial, and territorial cooperation to bolster border safety and public trust.

“These measures are essential to ensuring the integrity of the Canada-U.S. border, which is critical to the efficient flow of goods and services that communities and workers on both sides rely on,” Trudeau stated.

The leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to a “Team Canada” approach to U.S. relations, emphasizing the need to strengthen trade, supply chains, and manufacturing partnerships. They rejected the possibility of imposing a 25 per cent tariff on goods crossing the border, warning that such a move would only exacerbate economic challenges for families in both countries.

Trudeau reiterated the importance of maintaining open communication with Canada’s premiers, pledging to convene additional First Ministers’ Meetings in the future. “Trust in the integrity of our border is critical,” he said, emphasizing that border efficiency and security are fundamental to the economies and safety of both nations.

Canada’s relationship with the United States remains one of the most significant bilateral partnerships in the world. The Prime Minister and premiers agreed on the need to work together to protect Canadian interests and strengthen ties for the benefit of both Canadians and Americans.

As Trudeau and his provincial counterparts look to the future, the commitment to collaboration on border security, trade, and other shared priorities reflects a determination to preserve and enhance the deep ties between Canada and its southern neighbor.
