The City of Brantford, in collaboration with local artists, has launched its first Seniors Art Series, offering residents aged 55 and older the opportunity to explore creative expression through hands-on art programs. The initiative aims to celebrate local talent while providing accessible and inclusive activities for older adults.

The Seniors Art Series includes four free workshops, each focusing on a different art form. Participants will receive all necessary materials, and no prior experience is required.

The first workshop, Creative Collaging, takes place on Tuesday, February 18, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Woodman Park Community Centre (491 Grey St.), where attendees will use a variety of materials to create personal collages in a relaxed, judgment-free environment.

On Thursday, February 27, from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m., the Creating a Masterpiece session, also at Woodman Park Community Centre, will introduce participants to the significance of woodland woman paintings, a style deeply rooted in Indigenous traditions. Local Indigenous artist Alicia-Lynn Morin will lead the session, guiding attendees in creating their own unique artwork.

“I am eager to collaborate with the City of Brantford to provide space to discuss the meaning behind woodland woman paintings and help seniors create their own artistic masterpiece,” said Morin. “Programs like this, which focus on art and community engagement, are incredibly beneficial to our aging population.”

On Monday, March 3, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., participants will learn watercolour techniques at the Watercolour Bookmarks session at Woodman Park Community Centre, creating personalized bookmarks with delicate and expressive designs.

The series concludes with CROONERcize on Wednesday, March 5, from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. at T.B. Costain – SC Johnson Community Centre (16 Morrell St.). This interactive program combines gentle fitness movements and line dancing with sing-along music from iconic artists such as Elvis Presley, Dolly Parton, Neil Diamond, the Beatles, CCR, and popular movie soundtracks.

The Seniors Art Series is part of Brantford’s Healthy Aging Strategy, which prioritizes accessible and affordable recreational activities for older adults. The initiative aligns with the city’s broader efforts to support community-based programming that fosters well-being and social connection.

Space for the workshops is limited, and registration is required. Interested participants can sign up by emailing partnerships@brantford.ca or calling 519-759-4150 ext. 5986, providing their name, contact information, and preferred workshops. More details are available at Brantford.ca/HealthyLiving.

By creating opportunities for artistic expression, Brantford continues to support meaningful engagement and enhanced quality of life for its senior community.
