Ontario has announced its most popular baby names for 2023, with Olivia and Noah once again taking the top spots. Olivia, the reigning champion among baby girl names, has held the number one position for an impressive 15 consecutive years, while Noah has topped the list for boys for the fifth year in a row.

Charlotte maintained its status as a popular choice, securing second place among girls’ names, followed by Amelia, Emma, and Sophia. A notable addition to the rankings this year was Mila, which made its debut in ninth place. Sofia, spelled with an “f,” also joined the list for the first time, coming in at seventh, demonstrating the enduring charm of this name in its various forms. The remaining top names for girls included Mia, Ava, and Isla.

On the boys’ side, Liam held strong in second place, followed by Theodore and Oliver. Henry was the sole newcomer to the boys’ top 10, landing in the 10th spot. Other perennial favorites in the boys’ rankings included Jack, Lucas, Benjamin, William, and Leo, reflecting parents’ preference for timeless yet modern names.

Commenting on the announcement, Todd McCarthy, Ontario’s Minister of Public and Business Service Delivery and Procurement, highlighted the significance of welcoming a new baby and the meaningful process of choosing a name. He also emphasized the government’s efforts to simplify the paperwork that comes with new parenthood. “With ServiceOntario’s 5-in-1 Newborn Bundle, we’ve made it easier for Ontario parents to register their newborns and apply for essential documents like birth certificates and Social Insurance Numbers—all from the comfort of their home,” McCarthy said.

Ontario parents are encouraged to register their child’s birth within 30 days of their arrival. Since its launch in 2007, the Newborn Bundle has been used to register approximately 120,000 births annually, making it an essential resource for new families. This online service allows parents to efficiently complete multiple vital registrations in one process, offering convenience and flexibility from a desktop or mobile device.

The Newborn Bundle is just one of many services available through ServiceOntario’s user-friendly online platform, which offers over 55 services accessible 24/7, including renewing child health cards. As Ontario continues to embrace digital innovation, these tools aim to help families spend less time on administrative tasks and more time celebrating life’s milestones.

The release of the baby name rankings provides an annual snapshot of naming trends across the province, blending timeless classics with fresh favorites. With Olivia and Noah continuing to lead the pack, it is clear that Ontario parents appreciate names that are both enduring and meaningful.
