The Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) has recognized the City of Brantford Wastewater Treatment Plant with a Gold Recognition award for its exemplary efforts in improving water quality in the Grand River. The accolade was presented during the Grand River Watershed-wide Wastewater Optimization Program (GRWWOP) workshop on November 14, 2024. The achievement was further celebrated during the Brantford City Council meeting on November 26, 2024, where staff were honored for their contribution.

This recognition highlights the City’s success in maintaining an exceptionally high standard for effluent water quality discharged into the Grand River. Such efforts are crucial to protecting the river as a source of municipal drinking water for Brantford and downstream communities, while also fostering a healthier environment for aquatic ecosystems.

“I am incredibly proud of our team for achieving a Gold Recognition and a perfect score for the work being done at the Brantford Wastewater Treatment Plant,” said Selvi Kongara, Director of Environmental Services for the City of Brantford. “This award demonstrates our unwavering commitment to excellence and dedication to protecting the Grand River through quality effluent discharge. This is another incredible achievement, and we remain committed to maintaining this standard of performance in the future.”

The GRWWOP evaluates wastewater treatment facilities annually, awarding Gold, Silver, or Bronze recognitions based on a defined points system. The program’s overarching goal is to enhance the quality of the Grand River by reducing phosphorus and ammonia levels in wastewater discharged into the watershed.

Brantford’s role in the Grand River watershed involves collaboration with the GRCA, the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP), and municipal partners. Through the GRWWOP, the City works to meet regulatory compliance and ambitious voluntary effluent targets, aiming to minimize environmental impact. The program also provides technical support and operational training through workshops to assist facilities in improving performance.

The Gold Recognition award underscores Brantford’s commitment to environmental stewardship and its leadership in protecting one of the region’s most vital natural resources.
