York United FC has announced Mauro Eustáquio as the club’s new Head Coach, marking a historic moment in Canadian soccer. At just 31 years old, Eustáquio becomes the youngest-ever permanent manager of a Tier 1 professional football club in North America. He is also the first former Canadian Premier League (CPL) player to step into a Head Coach role within the league.
Eustáquio, who joined York United as Assistant Coach in February 2022, demonstrated his tactical acumen during a brief stint as interim Head Coach earlier this year. Following the departure of Martin Nash in May, Eustáquio led The Nine Stripes in two CPL matches, securing a home victory against the Halifax Wanderers before a hard-fought away loss to Forge FC.
In addition to his club contributions, Eustáquio’s coaching credentials earned him a spot on the Canadian national team’s (CANMNT) coaching staff. This past September, he assisted Jesse Marsch during friendlies against the United States and Mexico, further solidifying his reputation as a rising talent in Canadian football.
