The Grand Erie District School Board (GEDSB) has launched the Police Resource Outreach Supporting Education (PROSE) program in collaboration with local police services. This innovative initiative integrates police officers into the classroom to enhance student learning and foster stronger relationships between schools and law enforcement.
PROSE was developed in partnership with the Brantford Police Service and Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) detachments in Brant, Norfolk, and Haldimand counties. The program follows the recommendations of the Police in Schools Review Report (June 2023) and aims to create a safer, more inclusive learning environment for students across the district.
The program includes curriculum-aligned teaching modules developed collaboratively by educators and police officers. These modules focus on key topics such as internet safety, online behavior, and human trafficking awareness. The first module, Online Safety and Social Media, uses interactive, trauma-informed practices to teach students about navigating the digital world responsibly. A second module addresses Human Trafficking Awareness, providing students with tools to recognize warning signs and access help.
Grand Erie’s leadership emphasizes that the program is built on inclusivity, transparency, and restorative practices. Police officers involved in PROSE undergo cultural competence and bias awareness training to ensure their engagement with students is equitable and supportive.
“This partnership between the Grand Erie District School Board and local police services reflects our commitment to fostering positive learning environments,” said Susan Gibson, Chair of the Grand Erie District School Board. “Through PROSE, we’re creating consistent and inclusive opportunities for students to learn and grow.”
The program has received praise from stakeholders across the region. Interim Chief Jason Saunders of the Brantford Police Service highlighted the program’s focus on trust-building and mentorship, while OPP representatives emphasized its potential to strengthen safety and collaboration in schools.
Grand Erie Director of Education JoAnna Roberto expressed gratitude for the collaboration between educators and law enforcement, stating, “This partnership is a testament to what we can achieve when we work together to support our students.”
With PROSE, the Grand Erie District School Board aims to set a new standard for education and community safety, fostering meaningful connections that benefit students, staff, and families alike. For more information, visit the Grand Erie District School Board’s website.
