A new study by Bell, released today, highlights significant gaps in AI governance among Canadian businesses despite growing adoption of generative AI (GenAI) technologies like ChatGPT. According to the study, Navigating the Generative AI and Cybersecurity Journey, 60% of Canadian organizations using AI have limited or no strategy to guide deployment, manage risks, or define expected outcomes.

The report, based on a survey of 600 business leaders and IT professionals from medium to large enterprises, illustrates how GenAI is being integrated into Canadian workplaces. It highlights the benefits early adopters have experienced, as well as the pressing need for strategic planning and safeguards to mitigate risks associated with the technology.

GenAI tools have quickly gained traction, with 71% of professionals surveyed using the technology to some extent and 41% reporting regular use. The retail industry leads adoption, employing GenAI for customer-facing applications and inventory management, followed by the manufacturing and media sectors.

While businesses are embracing AI for its potential to optimize processes, reduce time to market, and improve product quality, concerns about cybersecurity have slowed widespread adoption. One-third of respondents expressed fears that malicious actors could access or manipulate AI systems, while 25% worried about the theft of sensitive data.

The study also revealed that potential security, legal, and reputational risks have significantly delayed AI adoption in many organizations. Although some businesses are implementing safeguards, 60% of surveyed organizations have classified less than half of their sensitive data, leaving them vulnerable as AI usage expands.

John Watson, Group President of Business Markets, AI & FX Innovation at Bell, emphasized the importance of governance in maximizing AI’s potential. “Bell’s study confirms that as adoption of generative AI continues to increase, it is more important than ever for organizations to have strong governance, safeguards, and data security. With this in place, the benefits of AI are unlimited.”

Bell’s report underscores the need for Canadian businesses to adopt a methodical approach to AI implementation, focusing on governance, risk management, and threat detection. By doing so, organizations can unlock AI’s transformative potential while protecting against evolving threats.
