The City of Brantford has announced plans to carry out the seasonal protective wrapping of the German Field Howitzer Cannon at Jubilee Terrace Park. This annual conservation measure will take place during the week of November 19 to 25, 2024, with the wrapping remaining in place until April 2025. The effort is part of the city’s ongoing commitment to preserving historical artifacts.
The German Field Howitzer Cannon, a prominent piece of Brantford’s heritage, is particularly vulnerable to the harsh winter elements due to its outdoor location. The cannon’s position near a busy intersection exposes it to road spray and accumulated snow, both of which contribute to accelerated corrosion. By wrapping the cannon, the city aims to protect it from snowmelt and salt spray, which are highly corrosive and can cause significant damage over time.
The protective covering not only prevents deterioration but also shields the newly installed concrete pad beneath the cannon from rust stains, ensuring the site remains visually appealing and well-maintained.
“These conservation measures are vital to stabilizing the cannon and safeguarding it for future generations,” a city representative stated. “The seasonal wrapping is a practical and effective way to preserve this important historical artifact.”
The German Field Howitzer Cannon is part of Brantford’s extensive Public Art collection, showcasing the city’s dedication to celebrating and preserving its rich history.
