Grand Erie Public Health (GEPH) is investigating four newly confirmed cases of measles in Norfolk County and the County of Brant, bringing the total number of cases in the region to 57. The outbreak now includes nine adults and 48 children across Haldimand County, Norfolk County, the City of Brantford, and the County of Brant.

According to GEPH, two of the new cases are currently hospitalized, while the remaining two individuals are recovering at home. Public health officials are actively tracing contacts who may have been exposed to the highly contagious virus.

GEPH has identified two locations where individuals may have been exposed to the measles virus:

  • Walsingham Christian School (6th Concession Rd., Walsingham) – February 10, 2025, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Norfolk General Hospital (365 West St., Simcoe) – February 14, 2025, from 3:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.

Anyone who was present at these locations during the specified times is urged to monitor for symptoms and seek medical advice if they develop signs of measles.

Symptoms typically appear seven to 21 days after exposure and may include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a characteristic red rash that spreads across the body.

GEPH is reminding residents of the importance of vaccination in preventing the spread of measles. The measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine is highly effective, with two doses providing 97% immunity. Public health officials recommend that individuals check their vaccination status and ensure they are up to date, particularly those who may have been in the identified exposure areas.

Individuals experiencing symptoms should call their healthcare provider or local public health unit before visiting a clinic or emergency department to prevent further transmission.
