The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has determined there are no grounds to charge a Brantford Police Service officer following an eviction standoff on October 15, 2024.

SIU Director Joseph Martino concluded that the officer’s use of an Anti-Riot Weapon Enfield (ARWEN) was legally justified.

The incident began when Brantford Police responded to a call from the sheriff’s office after a 51-year-old man threatened a sheriff with death during an attempted eviction.

Upon arrival, officers were also threatened from inside the apartment. Negotiations with the man, who was armed with an axe, lasted approximately four hours.

During a brief opening of the apartment door, an officer grabbed the man, leading to a struggle. Another officer discharged the ARWEN five times, striking the man.

The individual was arrested and transported to the hospital, where he was treated for a laceration to his upper right shoulder and a fractured right clavicle.

The SIU’s investigation reviewed the evidence and determined that the officer’s use of force was lawful and necessary under the circumstances.
