David Prang, CEO of the Chamber of Commerce Brantford-Brant since 2019, shared his concerns with BrantBlog regarding U.S. President Donald Trump’s suggestion of imposing 25 per cent tariffs on Canadian imports starting February 1.

The announcement, delivered Monday evening during a signing of unrelated executive orders at the White House, has sparked significant concern among Canadian business leaders.

While the Trump administration also set an April 1 deadline for trade studies to examine issues such as unfair practices and currency manipulation, the February tariff proposal has created immediate uncertainty.

Speaking on behalf of the chamber, Prang emphasized the importance of preparation and collaboration in navigating the situation.

“We are challenged by what might come, but we are working closely with the Canadian Chamber of Commerce and other associations to mitigate any potential damage,” he said.

Since December, the chamber has been gathering input from its members to understand the potential fallout.

Businesses across Ontario could face severe challenges, with up to 500,000 jobs at risk, according to initial estimates.

Local companies are already adjusting, with some accelerating shipments to minimize disruption.

“Many members are taking proactive steps, including getting orders out ahead of potential changes,” he noted.

In response to the uncertainty, the chamber is co-hosting an event with the county’s economic development department to address concerns and provide resources for local businesses. The goal is to foster understanding and prepare for potential outcomes.

The Chamber of Commerce Brantford-Brant is also urging provincial and federal governments to deliver a coordinated and robust response.

As the February deadline looms, the local business community is being encouraged to remain informed and proactive in facing potential challenges.
