A new chapter begins for the Brantford Bulldogs as the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) officially approves the team’s sale to a group led by National Hockey League (NHL) player Zach Hyman. Effective January 16, Hyman will take the reins of the storied franchise, marking an exciting turning point for the club and its passionate fanbase.

“The Brantford Bulldogs Hockey Club is an amazing organization, from the players to the staff to the most passionate fanbase in the OHL,” said Hyman, currently playing for the Edmonton Oilers in his 10th NHL season. “My family and I are thrilled to officially be a part of the Bulldogs family and the Brantford community. We know what the Bulldogs mean to the city, and we take this privilege to heart. Go Dogs!”

Hyman’s purchase ends the tenure of outgoing owner Michael Andlauer, who also owns the NHL’s Ottawa Senators and their American Hockey League affiliate, the Belleville Senators. Under Andlauer’s leadership, the Bulldogs secured J. Ross Robertson Cup championships in 2018 and 2022, developed numerous NHL players, and built a strong legacy of community engagement through the Bulldogs Foundation.

“I want to congratulate Zach Hyman and his family on their new role,” said Andlauer. “Their passion for hockey and commitment to the Brantford community made them the perfect choice to carry this team forward. To the fans, thank you for making the Bulldogs one of the best places to play in junior hockey. I know the team is in excellent hands.”

The announcement has been met with enthusiasm across Brantford, a city that embraced the Bulldogs when they brought OHL hockey back after nearly 40 years. Mayor Kevin Davis expressed gratitude to Andlauer for his contributions and welcomed the Hyman family with open arms.

“Michael Andlauer has been instrumental in making OHL hockey a success in our city,” Davis said. “We now warmly welcome Zach Hyman and his family to Brantford. Their leadership will ensure the Bulldogs continue to thrive both on and off the ice.”

A press conference scheduled for January 15 at the Hampton by Hilton in Brantford will bring together Hyman, Andlauer, OHL Commissioner Bryan Crawford, and Mayor Davis to officially introduce the new ownership and discuss the franchise’s future.

The Bulldogs, who have quickly become a cornerstone of Brantford’s sports culture, continue to draw large crowds to the Civic Centre and are negotiating a long-term lease that includes plans for a new arena.

“Hockey is more than just a game for my family,” Hyman said. “It teaches youth about teamwork and brings communities together. I’m humbled by this opportunity to give back to the game I love.”

The OHL echoed that sentiment, with Commissioner Crawford highlighting Brantford’s role as a model for junior hockey. “The strength of the OHL lies in its communities, and Brantford has proven to be an outstanding destination,” Crawford said. “We are excited to see the Hyman family build on the Bulldogs’ legacy.”

With a history of success on the ice and a deep commitment to community service, the Bulldogs aim to continue their winning tradition under the Hymans’ leadership. Fans can look forward to a bright future as the team moves forward into a new era.
