The federal Liberal Party is facing a political crisis that could see it lose official party status in the next election, according to a new poll by the Angus Reid Institute. The survey reveals that support for the Liberals among decided and leaning voters has plummeted to just 16 percent—the lowest level in modern Canadian history.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s approval rating has also fallen to an all-time low of 22 percent, intensifying calls for his resignation from both the public and within the party. Nearly half of Canadians (46 percent) and 59 percent of Liberal supporters believe Trudeau should step aside to allow for new leadership, while 38 percent are calling for an early general election in 2025.

With support below the 20 percent threshold needed to maintain official party status, the Liberals face the prospect of losing critical resources, speaking time in the House of Commons, and funding allocated to recognized political parties. This scenario would mark a dramatic reversal for a party that secured a majority government under Trudeau less than a decade ago.

Meanwhile, Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre remains well-positioned as the leading alternative, with 38 percent of respondents expressing support for his party. The NDP, led by Jagmeet Singh, trails at 20 percent but faces its own challenges, as Singh’s unfavorable ratings climb to 58 percent.

The poll also highlights deep dissatisfaction with Trudeau’s handling of economic and affordability issues, which have become central concerns for Canadians. Rising inflation, high housing costs, and stagnant wages have fueled voter frustration, leaving many disillusioned with the Liberals’ economic management.

Internal divisions within the party have compounded the crisis, as several high-profile cabinet ministers have resigned in recent months, raising questions about stability and direction. Trudeau’s holiday reflections could prove pivotal, with increasing pressure for the prime minister to announce whether he will lead the Liberals into the next election or step aside to give the party a chance to recover under new leadership.

As the Liberals grapple with historic unpopularity and the possibility of losing official party status, the road to rebuilding trust and credibility with voters remains steep. With a potential election on the horizon, the party faces an urgent need to redefine its vision and priorities—or risk political irrelevance.
