Beginning January 1, 2025, the City of Brantford’s Blue Box recycling program will transition to management by Circular Materials, a national not-for-profit organization dedicated to establishing an efficient and effective recycling system across Ontario.

This shift aligns with Ontario’s Resource Recovery and Circular Economy Act, introduced in 2016, which transfers responsibility for recycling programs from municipalities to product producers. The change is part of a province-wide initiative aimed at improving waste management and promoting sustainability.

During the transition period from January 1 to December 31, 2025, residents will experience no changes to their current recycling schedule or the list of accepted materials. The existing two-sort system—separating paper products in one bin and containers in the other—will remain in effect.

Residents may continue to drop off recyclable materials at the Mohawk Street Landfill, located at 20 Morrison Road.

As of January 1, 2025, residents with inquiries about recycling collection, missed pickups, or bin replacements should contact Emterra at 1-888-597-1541 or via email at customercareont@emterra.ca.

Notably, new or replacement recycling bins will no longer be available at the Mohawk Street Landfill starting in 2025. Residents should plan to request bins directly through Emterra.

The transition to producer responsibility marks a significant step toward a more sustainable recycling system. Circular Materials will oversee operations to ensure recycling processes are both efficient and environmentally responsible.
