Driver Charged With Stunt Driving After 178 km/h Stop in Brant County

Police say vehicle was clocked at nearly twice the posted speed limit on Colborne Street East

A 20-year-old Brantford driver has been charged with stunt driving after being stopped for travelling at more than twice the posted speed limit in Brant County, police say.

The Ontario Provincial Police said an officer conducting speed enforcement on Colborne Street East stopped the vehicle at approximately 9:04 p.m. on Tuesday, February 19, 2026, after observing it travelling at an excessively high rate of speed.

Police allege the vehicle was clocked at 178 kilometres per hour in an 80 km/h zone.

The driver was charged with performing a stunt by excessive speed and with speeding under Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act.

Under provincial legislation, the driver’s licence was suspended for 30 days, and the vehicle was impounded for 14 days.

No injuries were reported.

In a statement, the OPP said excessive speed remains one of the leading contributors to serious and fatal collisions on Ontario roads and continues to be a focus of enforcement.

Police are urging motorists to obey posted speed limits and drive according to road and weather conditions.
