Grand Erie Public Health has issued a Cold Notification for the region, including Brantford-Brant and Haldimand-Norfolk, as temperatures are expected to drop below -15°C, with wind chill values reaching -20°C or colder.

The notification, issued by the region’s Medical Officer of Health, will remain in effect until further notice. Public health officials are urging residents to take extra precautions to stay safe during the cold snap.

“Exposure to extremely cold temperatures can lead to serious health risks, including frostbite and hypothermia,” said a spokesperson for Grand Erie Public Health. “Everyone is vulnerable in these conditions, but older adults, infants, people with chronic illnesses, and those without stable housing are particularly at risk.”

How to Stay Safe During Extreme Cold

To reduce the risk of cold-related illness and injury, Grand Erie Public Health recommends the following safety measures:

AD
  • Dress in layers, ensuring the outer layer is wind- and water-resistant.
  • Cover exposed skin with hats, gloves, scarves, or face coverings.
  • Drink warm fluids that are free of caffeine and alcohol to stay hydrated.
  • Check on vulnerable individuals, including elderly neighbours and those living alone.
  • Know the signs of frostbite and hypothermia. Visit Brantford.ca/ExtremeCold for more information.
