Ontario Premier Doug Ford speaks during an investment announcement at a manufacturing facility in Brantford, Tuesday morning.

The Ontario government says Massilly North America Inc. will invest $85 million to establish a new food can manufacturing facility in Brantford, a project expected to retain 228 jobs and create 50 new manufacturing positions.

The investment will expand Massilly’s operations to include coil cutting and three-piece can production lines, allowing food packaging sold across Canada to rely on Canadian steel and reducing dependence on imported steel packaging.

Provincial officials say the move strengthens domestic supply chains amid global and geopolitical uncertainty.

Ontario is supporting the project with $5 million through the Ontario Together Trade Fund (OTTF).

“Today’s investment is great news for workers and families in Brantford and across Ontario and will support good-paying jobs throughout our manufacturing supply chain,” Premier Doug Ford said, adding that the province will continue efforts to attract investment and strengthen economic competitiveness.

Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade Minister Vic Fedeli said the investment aligns with Ontario’s strategy to help manufacturers adapt to external pressures.
“Through the Ontario Together Trade Fund, we are proud to support Massilly in this next phase of growth and look forward to seeing their three-piece cans and steel coils solidify Ontario’s position as a manufacturing powerhouse,” Fedeli said.

Massilly North America president Garnet Lasby said the expansion reflects confidence in Canadian manufacturing.
“By combining Canadian steel with our technical expertise, we are creating a ‘Made in Canada’ solution that benefits the environment, the economy and the consumer,” he said.

Brantford–Brant MPP Will Bouma said the investment will help reshore critical supply chains and expand market access.

“Massilly Brantford can serve more interprovincial customers, develop new markets and reshore critical supply chains,” Bouma said, adding that the company will play a key role in southwestern Ontario’s manufacturing sector.

Brantford Mayor Kevin Davis said the project underscores confidence in the city’s workforce.

“Provincial support through the Ontario Together Trade Fund is helping Massilly expand its can-making operations, strengthen local supply chains and create new economic opportunities for our city,” Davis said.

According to the province, the Ontario Together Trade Fund, launched as part of the 2025 Ontario Budget, has supported $120 million in total project investments to date, protecting and creating about 1,500 jobs.

The government has since announced an additional $100 million for the program, bringing total funding to $150 million over three years.

Ontario’s manufacturing sector employs more than 800,000 workers province-wide.

Since 2018, the province says it has attracted $213 billion in public and private investment and created more than one million jobs, as it continues to navigate global trade pressures and U.S. tariffs.
