The Brantford Police Service has announced it will not participate in the federal government’s Assault-Style Firearm Compensation Program (ASFCP), which officially began its national declaration period on January 19, 2026.
The ASFCP is a federally administered initiative aimed at removing certain assault-style firearms from circulation through a government buy-back and compensation system.
While the program is led by the federal government, participation by municipal police services is not mandatory.
In a public advisory, the Brantford Police Service confirmed it will not be offering firearm collection or storage appointments in connection with the federal program.
“At this time, the Brantford Police Service will continue to prioritize operational resources toward frontline policing responsibilities, including emergency response, criminal investigations, crime prevention, and victim support services,” the statement reads.
“These priorities remain central to ensuring community safety and effective law enforcement within the City of Brantford.”
Although the Brantford Police Service will not directly assist with compensation or collection under the ASFCP, the Service emphasized its ongoing cooperation with other police agencies and all levels of government on public safety and lawful firearms regulation.
