With much of Canada under Environment Canada cold and snow alerts, the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC) is urging residents to take steps to protect their homes and vehicles from winter-related damage.

“Winter storms and extreme freezing temperatures can cause extensive damage to homes, businesses and vehicles,” said Rob de Pruis, IBC’s national director of consumer and industry relations, adding that preventative measures can help reduce losses.

IBC advises homeowners to focus on preventing frozen pipes by maintaining heat, insulating vulnerable plumbing and knowing where water shut-off valves are located.

Canadians are also encouraged to prepare for possible power outages, limit travel during severe weather, clear snow and ice from vehicles, and keep vents and gas meters free of snow.

The bureau notes that insurance coverage is based on the perils listed in individual policies.

Damage from frozen or burst pipes and high winds is typically covered, provided policy conditions, such as maintaining heat and checking vacant homes, are met.

Vehicle damage from wind, ice or water is covered only if comprehensive insurance has been purchased.

Residents with questions about coverage are encouraged to contact their insurance provider.
