Grand Erie Public Health (GEPH) has published updated opioid and substance use surveillance data for Brantford-Brant through its public dashboard, providing information on opioid-related emergency department visits, hospital admissions, deaths and police-reported drug-related incidents.
The dashboard, titled Brantford-Brant Opioid and Substance Use Information System, compiles data from multiple sources, including Ontario’s Ministry of Health, the Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario and the Brantford Police Service.
GEPH states that the data are intended to provide timely information to the public and community partners and are subject to revision.
Data presented under the emergency department visits section show monthly counts and rates of emergency department visits for opioid poisoning in Brant and Ontario from 2017 to 2025.
The dashboard notes that data from 2022 onward are considered preliminary and may change.
Hospital admission data displayed for the period between 2019 and 2024 show a total count of 189 opioid-related hospital admissions in Brant.
Demographic breakdowns for confirmed data up to 2024 categorize admissions by sex and age group.
The dashboard also includes data on suspected drug-related deaths, based on preliminary investigations by the Office of the Chief Coroner.
These data are presented by month and year, with demographic breakdowns by age, sex, living arrangements and mode of use.
The dashboard specifies that suspected drug-related deaths include cases where the coroner has indicated the death may be drug-related and that figures may change as investigations are completed.
In addition, police-reported drug-related incident data are included for Brantford only. The dashboard notes that these figures reflect incidents reported by the Brantford Police Service and do not provide a complete picture of substance use in the region.
The reported data are based on information collected at the location of the incident and include both fatal and non-fatal cases.
GEPH states that demographic data for incidents are available by age and sex for confirmed data up to 2024.
The opioid and substance use surveillance dashboard is available through the Grand Erie Public Health website, with interactive tools allowing users to view data by month, quarter or year.
