The Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board (BHNCDSB) has elected Norfolk County Trustee Carol Luciani as Chair and City of Brantford Trustee Bill Chopp as Vice-Chair for a one-year term.
The elections were held during the board’s annual meeting, which also included a Celebration of the Eucharist attended by trustees and senior leadership.
The liturgy was presided over by the Rev. Augustine Ogundele of the Diocese of London, with music ministry provided by BHNCDSB Religion and Family Life Consultant Keri Calvesbert and Curriculum Arts Consultant Chris Rait.
In her address to the district, Luciani outlined her priorities for the coming year, emphasizing student well-being, teaching and learning, and a sense of belonging across the system.
She said these areas are “interconnected pillars that uphold the success and flourishing of our school communities,” and reaffirmed the board’s commitment to serving students and staff through faith-based leadership.
Luciani brings extensive experience to the role, having previously served five years as vice-chair and the past year as chair of the board.
A former elementary school principal, she is recognized for her work in leadership, governance, and advocacy for inclusivity and equity in education. She is also an active member of the Our Lady Queen of Martyrs parish in Delhi and the Catholic Family Parishes of Norfolk.
During her acceptance speech, Luciani highlighted the importance of collaboration among families, schools, and parishes, describing Catholic education as a shared partnership.
She thanked parents, educators, support staff, and students, and pointed to recent initiatives aimed at strengthening parent engagement and staff wellness across the district.
Luciani also underscored the board’s renewed focus on financial stewardship, transparency, and accountability, stating that resource decisions must directly support classrooms, student mental health, special education, and safe learning environments.
“Every dollar must serve students,” she said.
Looking ahead, she cited recent investments in system supports, the opening of a new Catholic elementary school, and ongoing consultations and construction for additional elementary and secondary schools.
While acknowledging progress reflected in recent EQAO results, she noted that continued improvement remains a priority.
Luciani concluded by thanking the board’s senior leadership team and reaffirming the district’s mission of “Excellence in Learning Living in Christ,” saying she looks forward to working with trustees, staff, families, and students throughout the year.
