The City of Brantford is reminding residents to remain alert after reports of individuals going door-to-door claiming to represent the Brantford Fire Department and offering to inspect smoke alarms.
According to the City, the Brantford Fire Department does carry out door-to-door smoke alarm inspections under its Smoke Alarms Save Lives program, which is aimed at ensuring homes are equipped with working smoke alarms and improving community fire safety.
Municipal officials stressed, however, that legitimate fire department personnel are always in uniform and travel in clearly marked Brantford Fire Department vehicles.
Residents are being advised not to grant access to anyone who cannot clearly identify themselves as fire department staff or if they feel uncomfortable with the interaction.
Anyone with doubts about the legitimacy of a visit is encouraged to contact the Brantford Fire Department at 519-752-0540 to confirm whether an inspection is scheduled.
The City said resident awareness and caution are key to maintaining public safety.
