The Brantford Fire Department has launched a public awareness campaign ahead of major changes to the Ontario Fire Code that will expand carbon monoxide (CO) alarm requirements across residential properties beginning January 1, 2026.

The update will require CO alarms on every storey of a home, including floors without sleeping areas, as well as outside every bedroom or sleeping space.

The regulations apply to existing detached and semi-detached homes, townhouses, cottages, and care facilities that contain fuel-burning appliances, fireplaces or attached garages.

“Carbon monoxide is often referred to as the silent killer since it can only be detected by a working carbon monoxide alarm,” Fire Chief Todd Binkley said in a statement.

“That’s why it’s incredibly important for all Brantford residents to protect themselves from this invisible threat by following the new CO alarm requirements laid out in the Ontario Fire Code.”

The fire department is urging residents to ensure that alarms carry a recognized certification mark — CSA, ULC or ETL — and are installed accordingly with manufacturer instructions.

Carbon monoxide is an odourless, colourless and potentially fatal gas produced during the incomplete burning of carbon-based fuels such as natural gas, propane, oil, gasoline and wood.

Malfunctioning furnaces and water heaters, gas stoves and vehicle exhaust in enclosed areas are among the most common sources.

Open house set for December 12

As part of its outreach efforts, the Brantford Fire Department will host a Holiday Fire Safety Open House on December 12, 2025, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Fire Station No. 4, located at 400 Colborne Street West.

The event will offer residents information about the new CO alarm rules along with family-friendly activities, including photos with Santa, DIY gift-bag crafting, and complimentary hot chocolate and cookies.

More information about the updated regulations is available at Brantford.ca/KnowTheCode. The department can also be reached at 519-752-0540 or fire@brantford.ca.
