The City of Brantford says its winter maintenance crews and equipment are fully prepared as seasonal weather approaches.
Plows, salters and anti-icing trucks have been serviced and are ready for deployment, and the City’s road salt reserves are stocked for the coming months.
“Keeping our roads and sidewalks clear and safe is always a top priority,” said Mark Jacklyn, Director of Operational Services.
“When conditions call for it, our crews are ready to work around the clock to keep Brantford moving safely through snow, slush and freezing rain.”
City staff will monitor weather systems closely and pre-treat high-priority routes with anti-icing materials when required. Residents are encouraged to park off-street whenever possible to support safe and efficient plowing.
Certain streets across Brantford are designated snow routes, where parking is strictly prohibited during winter events until plowing and salting are complete.
Vehicles left on these routes may be ticketed and towed.
“Every car off the road makes a difference,” said Rob Smith, Manager of Traffic Services.
“It helps crews clear the full width of the roadway and complete work faster.”
Brantford maintains more than 1,400 lane kilometres of roadway using a priority system.
Plowing on arterial Red Routes begins at 5 cm of accumulation, with completion typically within six hours of a storm ending.
Collector Blue Routes and residential Green Routes are plowed at 8 cm, with target timelines of 12 hours and 16 hours, respectively.
After a storm, crews focus on clearing the Downtown Business Improvement Area (BIA), sidewalks fronting City-owned properties, municipal parking lots, pedestrian crossings, bike lanes, and major routes including bridges and underpasses.
Property owners must clear snow and ice from adjacent sidewalks within 24 hours of a snowfall ending, in accordance with Municipal Code Articles 614.8.1 and 614.8.3.
To allow staff to complete city-wide clearing, individual customer service requests are paused during the first 24 hours after major snowfall events.
Requests resume once a full 24-hour snow-free period has passed.
