As Ontario marks Crime Prevention Week, local police are urging residents to take simple but effective steps to protect their vehicles and personal belongings.
The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in Brant County are focusing this week’s awareness efforts on vehicle security — one of the most common and preventable forms of property crime.
Officers are reminding drivers that thefts often occur when vehicles are left unlocked or valuables are left in plain sight.
Residents are encouraged to lock their vehicles whenever unattended and to keep items such as wallets, purses, electronics, groceries, gifts, or sports equipment hidden or stored in the trunk.
Even short stops can present opportunities for theft.
“Hey folks, it’s Crime Prevention Week,” said a Provincial Constable in a video shared by Brant OPP.
“Keep your vehicle locked up, and if you have any valuables in the car, keep them hidden. Take your valuables with you. Let’s not keep our items visible to the public — it’s an invitation for someone to come by, try your car door, or possibly break into your car.”
The campaign encourages community members to stay vigilant and work together to reduce theft and vandalism.
Police say small actions, like removing visible valuables and locking doors, can make a significant difference in keeping neighbourhoods safe.
Crime Prevention Week runs across Ontario each November, with police services highlighting practical ways to deter crime and promote safety awareness.
