A Breath of Fresh Air for a Popular City Park

Brantford’s Donegal Park was alive with energy on Saturday morning as more than 30 community volunteers gathered to take part in the city’s Community Tree Planting event.
Together, they helped plant 450 native trees and shrubs, contributing to Brantford’s long-term goal of expanding its urban tree canopy and strengthening green spaces across the community.
City Councillor Rose Sicoli, who represents Ward 1, said the initiative reflects the city’s ongoing commitment to sustainability.
“We passed a resolution a few years ago where we were shifting to more of a native tree base for our neck of the woods here,” Sicoli explained.
“Any time we can get out and plant 450 trees, I would say it takes us a significant step forward toward achieving the goals that we set for ourselves a few years ago.”
Partnerships played a vital role in bringing the event to life, with the Grand River Conservation Authority, Brant Tree Coalition, and Neighbourhood Alliance of Brantford leading the way.
“It takes a village,” Sicoli said.
“It takes organizations such as the Grand River Conservation Authority and the Brant Tree Coalition to bring people together, to gather volunteers who are passionate about moving us toward our goal of increasing our tree canopy, to bring us all together and to organize this, to keep us moving forward in the right direction.”
For those who took part, the event was more than just a morning outdoors. “It just really feels good to roll up your sleeves and get out there and get your hands in the dirt,” Sicoli said.
“It’s good for morale today, but it’s something that will bring benefit and affect the landscape for generations.”
Among those volunteers was Randi-Lynn Jancik, who said her motivation came from a shared love of nature and community connection.
“The joy nature brings to everyone is key to being part of these types of initiatives. It brings us all closer together,” she said.
“We get to meet new people and see faces from previous events. Again, bringing us closer together as a community for sure.”

Jancik also reflected on the positive atmosphere throughout the morning.
“My takeaway was how smoothly these events run,” she said. “People helping each other and children smiling — that’s when you know everyone enjoys these events.”
According to Sicoli, the enthusiasm is already spreading.
“I’ve had quite a few people, since posting on Facebook, reach out to say, ‘How can I do this? I want to do more of this.’ The domino effect of doing one event like this — it’s hard to even quantify how long that will have an impact on the community, but it’s definitely generational.”
As volunteers packed up their shovels and gloves, there was a shared sense of pride in helping shape Brantford’s greener future.
“It was just a really good way to spend my day,” Sicoli said.
“It brought the community together. I met a whole bunch of like-minded people who were happy to get out there and make their mark on planting some trees and impacting our community in a positive way.”
