Brantford Fire urges residents to celebrate Diwali safely and responsibly

With Diwali approaching on Monday, October 20, 2025, the City of Brantford and the Brantford Fire Department are reminding residents to follow safety regulations and City bylaws when setting off fireworks.

Under local regulations, fireworks are permitted on Diwali, provided they are discharged safely and only on private property that meets the required fallout zone.

Fireworks that reach heights of 90 feet must have a clear fallout area of at least 180 feet in all directions — a standard that many residential properties cannot accommodate.

Fire officials suggest that neighbours coordinate joint displays using multiple adjoining backyards to safely expand the fallout zone.

They also advise purchasing fireworks from reputable vendors who can provide details about discharge heights and appropriate use for residential settings.

“We know fireworks are a big part of Diwali celebrations,” a spokesperson for Brantford Fire said.

“But safety has to come first. Planning ahead, checking your space, and knowing the rules can prevent fires and injuries.”

Key restrictions

• Fireworks are not allowed in City parks or on any City streets without a special permit.

• They may only be discharged on private property that meets safety distance requirements.

• Written permission from the property owner is required if the fireworks are set off or fall onto someone else’s property.

Critical safety requirements

• The fallout zone must be twice the height of the fireworks in all directions.

• Fireworks may only be discharged between sunset and 11 p.m. on October 20.

• Displays should only occur in calm weather and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

• Residents should keep a fire extinguisher, water hose, or bucket of sand nearby and clean up debris to reduce fire hazards.

Those who notice fireworks being discharged in City parks, streets, or unsafe conditions are asked to contact the City’s By-law Department at 519-759-4150 or call 9-1-1 if the situation poses a fire hazard.

The Fire Department warns that anyone found violating the Fireworks By-law could face fines or be charged the cost of emergency response under the City’s Fees and Charges By-law.

City officials are encouraging the community to enjoy the Festival of Lights responsibly, ensuring the celebrations remain bright — not dangerous.
