A flag-raising ceremony at Harmony Square on October 10 officially marked the declaration of October as Probus Month in Brantford, recognizing the contributions of local retirees who continue to build community through connection, learning, and engagement.

Probus is a worldwide non-profit organization that fosters friendship, fun, and fellowship among retired and semi-retired individuals.

Members of the city’s five Probus clubs meet regularly for guest speaker presentations, book clubs, group outings, and travel experiences, encouraging both social and intellectual vitality.

Speaking at the event, Donna Potoczek, District 6 Director for Probus Canada, said the proclamation underscores Brantford’s strong civic spirit.

“Brantford can take great pride in having five Probus Clubs operating within the city, bringing together hundreds of members,” she said.

“This vibrant Probus presence is a testament to the city’s commitment to community and makes Brantford an even more attractive place to belong.”

Mayor Kevin Davis, who joined Potoczek in raising the Probus flag, thanked the roughly 30 members and city representatives who gathered for the occasion.

“This recognition celebrates the valuable contributions that Probus members make to community life here in Brantford,” Davis said.

Probus Clubs, founded in the United Kingdom in the 1960s and introduced to Canada in 1987, have grown into a nationwide network of more than 250 clubs.

In Brantford, the organization’s presence reflects the city’s aging population and its emphasis on fostering active, connected retirement living.

The flag will remain at Harmony Square throughout October as a symbol of community involvement, lifelong learning, and the social ties that continue to strengthen Brantford’s civic identity.
