The City of Brantford has officially launched Phase 1 of its long-awaited Downtown Revitalization Project, with construction crews now replacing decades-old underground infrastructure across several key streets in the city’s core.
The first phase focuses on essential upgrades to water, sewer, and utility systems along Brant Avenue, Icomm Drive, Hill Street, Dalhousie Street, and Colborne Street, ensuring the city’s aging network can continue to provide reliable service to residents and businesses.
These foundational works are also a necessary precursor to Phase 2, which will bring extensive surface-level improvements to the downtown area.
City officials say the underground work will help prevent future service disruptions and accommodate growth in the downtown.
Above ground, the project will deliver new and improved roads, sidewalks, and traffic flow, creating a safer, more accessible, and pedestrian-friendly environment for visitors and businesses.
While construction is underway, traffic will be reduced to one southbound lane on Brant Avenue (between Dalhousie Street and Colborne Street) and one eastbound lane on Icomm Drive (between Colborne Street and Market Street South).
Traffic access will be maintained where possible, but temporary full road closures or delays may occur as crews complete the infrastructure work safely.
The City is emphasizing that downtown businesses remain open throughout construction and encourages residents to continue supporting local merchants.
