The City of Brantford, in partnership with Western University and the Brant’s Response Against Violence Everywhere (BRAVE) Committee, has launched a free online course aimed at helping residents recognize and respond to intimate partner and gender-based violence.
The program, Neighbours, Friends & Families: Understanding & Preventing Intimate Partner & Gender-Based Violence, was developed by Western University’s Centre for Research & Education on Violence Against Women & Children (CREVAWC).
It focuses on identifying warning signs, initiating conversations with individuals who may be at risk, and directing them to available supports.
The self-directed course takes about an hour to complete and is open to unlimited registration.
Participants receive a certificate of completion from Western University. Registration is available through bit.ly/IPVCourse.
In October 2023, Brantford joined more than 100 Ontario municipalities in declaring intimate partner and gender-based violence an epidemic.
The following March, city council approved a Community Action Plan designed to expand collaboration, strengthen advocacy and raise public awareness around the issue.
Mayor Kevin Davis said the new course reinforces that commitment.
“The City of Brantford is committed to ensuring that everyone in our community can live a life free from violence.
This learning opportunity highlights local resources, strengthens awareness and promotes education around intimate partner and gender-based violence.”
Dr. Christine Wildman, Research and Knowledge Mobilization Specialist at Western University, emphasized education as a preventive tool.
“This course provides neighbours, friends, family members and co-workers with the information they need to help prevent violence, support each other and promote safety.”
Natasha Dobler, Executive Director at Nova Vita Domestic Violence Prevention Services and Tri-Chair of the BRAVE Committee, called the program vital in a community facing crisis.
“IPV/GBV is an epidemic and an ongoing crisis in our community. Ending violence requires all of us to be engaged and informed.”
Residents can learn more about Brantford’s Intimate Partner and Gender-Based Violence Community Action Plan at Brantford.ca/IPV.
Officials say the course is one more step toward equipping residents with tools to support survivors and contribute to a coordinated response across the city.
