As part of a citywide initiative to commemorate Canada’s veterans, the City of Brantford has completed the installation of two new Remembrance Day-themed crosswalks near the Brant County War Memorial.

Located at the intersections of Bridge Street & Dalhousie Street and West Street & Brant Avenue, the crosswalks aim to expand on the memorial’s existing tributes while providing a daily visual reminder of the sacrifices made by Canadian service members.

The project originated from a motion passed by City Council on November 26, 2024, which called for the installation of commemorative crosswalks in time for Remembrance Day 2025.

“The new crosswalks are more than public art,” said Councillor Brian Van Tilborg, who introduced the motion.

“They are a visible reminder, in the heart of our community, that we will always remember the sacrifices made by those who served and continue to serve our country.”

Constructed using durable materials expected to last between five and ten years, the installations serve both practical and symbolic purposes.

City officials describe the initiative as part of a broader, long-term commitment to honour veterans and active military personnel.

In developing the design, the City worked closely with the Royal Canadian Legion, Brantford Branch 461, to ensure the symbolism aligned with national traditions and values.

At the Legion’s recommendation, poppies were intentionally excluded from the crosswalks’ design out of respect; officials deemed it inappropriate for vehicles or pedestrians to pass over such a solemn symbol.

Similarly, while the crosswalks incorporate a maple leaf motif, the design differs from the stylized leaf featured on the national flag.

This distinction was deliberate, reflecting the City’s effort to avoid the perception of disrespect toward Canada’s most prominent national emblem.

The final design features a striking red-and-black colour scheme, a maple leaf, and the silhouette of a service member—elements that have since been adopted by other municipalities across Ontario, signaling a growing movement of civic remembrance.

City staff will monitor the crosswalks to ensure they remain in optimal condition for Brantford’s upcoming Remembrance Day ceremony on November 11.
