A new Indigenous Youth Hub has opened in the city to support young people between the ages of 13 and 17.
The program, launched by the City of Brantford in partnership with Niwasa Kendaaswin Teg, is based at Brantford Native Housing, 318 Colborne Street, with additional outreach offered through community partner locations.
The hub provides a range of services that combine academic support, cultural teachings, recreation, and life skills. Organizers say the model takes a wholistic approach, guided by the “four fires” — mind, body, spirit, and emotion.
“Indigenous youth in Brantford need spaces where they feel safe, supported, and connected to their culture,” said Leigh Staats, Director of Operations at Niwasa Kendaaswin Teg.
“With the funding from Building Safer Communities, and the support of both our community partners and the City of Brantford, we are creating opportunities for young people to build confidence, develop life skills, and strengthen their sense of identity.”
Programs will run after school and on some weekends. Services include mentorship, land-based cultural learning, recreational activities, awareness sessions on topics such as human trafficking, and art projects with Indigenous artists.
City officials said the hub responds to gaps identified during community consultations.
“The City of Brantford is proud to support initiatives that empower Indigenous youth and foster safer, more inclusive communities,” said Amy Brandt, Community Initiatives Coordinator.
“This program reflects our commitment to building an inclusive community by ensuring that all young people have access to supports that help them thrive.”
The hub is funded through Public Safety Canada’s Building Safer Communities Fund, which supports prevention programs aimed at reducing the risk of youth involvement in gun and gang violence.
Locally, the initiative is tied to Brantford’s 2024-2026 Building Safer Communities Action Plan.
The program runs until March 2026. Updates and details on activities are available through Niwasa’s Facebook page or by email at youthmanager@niwasa.ca.
