Residents will have a chance to go behind the scenes of the city’s waste system at Waste Discovery Day: From Curb to Landfill on Saturday, October 4, 2025, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Mohawk Street Landfill, 20 Morrison Rd.
The free event includes guided tours of the landfill, information booths, and children’s activities such as a bouncy castle, face painting, and crafts. Free parking will be available on site.
City staff will explain how waste is managed, the impact of recycling and green bin use, and what steps residents can take to reduce the amount of garbage sent to landfill.
The event comes as Brantford develops a new Solid Waste Management Master Plan, which sets a target of raising the city’s waste diversion rate from 34 per cent to at least 70 per cent by 2050.
Currently, about 36 per cent of household garbage is food waste. Officials say using the green bin program can help reduce greenhouse gases produced at the landfill.
Ontario’s Blue Box program is also shifting to producer responsibility this year, with new provincewide standards for recyclable materials expected in 2026 under Circular Materials, a national non-profit organization.
