The City of Brantford, in partnership with Wilfrid Laurier University’s Brantford campus, is bringing back the International Film Series this fall with six free screenings showcasing acclaimed films from around the world.
Running from September through December at the Steven and Helen Kun Theatre, the series continues a tradition that began in 2023, drawing hundreds of residents to experience global cinema in the heart of the city.
Since its inception, more than 600 people have attended screenings of films representing 13 different countries.
“The International Film Series continues to offer community members from all walks of life the opportunity to experience diverse cinematic art presented in multiple languages,” said Dr. Christina Han, Associate Professor of History and Director of the Hub for Community Solutions at Wilfrid Laurier University.
“The screenings have cultivated a strong sense of community, drawing regular attendees ranging from youth at the downtown campuses to seniors from the nearby Beckett Recreation Centre.”
This year’s lineup spans cultures and languages, with films exploring themes of resilience, belonging, and human connection.
Highlights include The Artist (France), Cinema Paradiso (Italy), Flee (Denmark), Coming Home (China), The Father (United Kingdom), and Io Capitano (Italy, Belgium, France).
Screenings begin at 7 p.m., preceded by an introduction and discussion. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. at the Kun Theatre, located in the Research and Academic Centre at 150 Dalhousie Street.
No registration is required, and light refreshments will be served.
“The films we’ve selected explore relatable themes like coming of age, overcoming hardship, and finding community,” said Taylor Berzins, Community Initiatives Coordinator at the City of Brantford.
“We hope filmgoers leave each screening with a sense of connection.”
Organizers say the series not only enriches cultural life in Brantford but also advances broader community goals. It supports the Brantford Immigration Partnership and the city’s OneBrantford: Inclusive City Strategy by encouraging residents to engage in diverse cultural experiences and share perspectives through film.
