To mark International Seniors Day, the City of Brantford will host a Seniors Resource Fair on Oct. 1, offering older adults and their families access to programs and services aimed at promoting healthy, connected living.

The event, organized in partnership with the Older Adult Centres’ Association of Ontario (OACAO) and supported through Ontario government funding, will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Doug Snooks Eagle Place Community Centre. Admission is free.

More than 35 community organizations will be on hand, including the Canadian Mental Health Association, the Community Legal Clinic Brant Haldimand Norfolk, Service Canada, the Alzheimer Society and the Grand River Council on Aging.

Presentations will cover topics such as aging with intention, winter driving safety and fire prevention at home, while health-focused activities will include blood pressure checks and hearing screenings.

Mayor Kevin Davis said the initiative reflects Brantford’s commitment to its growing senior population.

“As a designated Age-Friendly Community by the World Health Organization since 2017, Brantford continues to invest in resources for our aging population,” he said.

“I encourage all seniors and their families to join us by celebrating National Seniors Day at Brantford’s Seniors Resource Fair.”

OACAO executive director Sue Hesjedahl added the fair will help reduce isolation and highlight opportunities for seniors to remain active.

“This event connects older adults with essential programs and services, helping to reduce isolation and encourage healthy, active aging,” she said.

Lucy Marco, executive director of the Grand River Council on Aging, praised the City for reintroducing the fair on a meaningful date.

“We are thrilled that the City of Brantford is reintroducing a Seniors Resource Fair and that it is being held on October 1, which is National Seniors Day in Canada,” she said.

The City noted that the fair also aligns with its Healthy Aging Strategy, which prioritizes seniors’ health and wellness, community-based programming and the reduction of social isolation.

Attendees will receive a complimentary bag for resource materials while supplies last.
