A 53-year-old Brantford man is facing multiple charges after police say he was caught riding a modified e-bike at more than twice the legal speed limit during a back-to-school road safety blitz.
On Monday, Sept. 1, at around 11:30 a.m., officers with the Brantford Police Service’s Traffic Unit were monitoring traffic on Paris Road near Tollgate Road when they recorded the e-bike travelling 82 km/h in a posted 50 km/h zone.
Police say the e-bike had been illegally altered to exceed the provincial maximum speed of 32 km/h for power-assisted bicycles.
A traffic stop revealed the rider did not have insurance and that his driver’s licence had been suspended nearly three decades ago.
The accused has been charged with:
- Driving while under suspension
- Speeding: 82 km/h in a 50 km/h zone
- Drive motor vehicle – improper licence
- Power-assisted bicycle – speed or power modified
- Owner operate motor vehicle on a highway – no insurance
Brantford police are reminding residents that e-bikes are subject to strict provincial regulations. Under Ontario law, riders must ensure their vehicles are not modified beyond the legislated speed and power limits.
