Brantford residents lined up Friday for the official reopening of the Wayne Gretzky Sports Centre’s waterslide, a $675,000 project funded entirely through the federal Canada Community-Building Fund.
Mayor Kevin Davis, joined by MP Larry Brock, MPP Will Bouma, councillors, lifeguards, and day campers, cut the ribbon on the 50-foot enclosed slide, which arcs outside the building before plunging back indoors.
More than 150 people attended the launch, which featured a public swim with music and family activities.
The project is the latest upgrade at the city’s largest recreation hub.
“The updated waterslide is a great addition to Brantford’s state-of-the-art swimming facilities,” Davis said.
“It offers exciting recreational opportunities for both residents and visitors.”
Housing and Infrastructure Minister Gregor Robertson said Ottawa’s investment reflects a broader goal of expanding community infrastructure.
“This investment helps ensure that Brantford residents have access to safe, modern, and reliable recreational spaces where families can come together, stay active, and build lasting memories,” he said.
The slide is open during all public swims through August 31, Monday to Friday and Sunday afternoons. From September, it will operate on weekends, with discounted Tuesday evening swims running into March.
Under provincial safety rules, riders must pass a swim test and be at least 120 centimetres tall.
City officials say the waterslide reinforces the Gretzky Centre’s role as a cornerstone of community recreation.
The facility already draws thousands for swimming, fitness, and hockey, and the slide is expected to boost family participation.
