The Ontario government is enhancing its support for the province’s grape growers and wineries by approving 24 new grape varieties for Vintners Quality Alliance (VQA) certification — a move officials say will promote sustainability, create jobs, and increase global competitiveness for Ontario wines.
The newly approved grapes were selected for their ability to produce high-quality wines, withstand extreme temperatures, and reduce reliance on chemical fertilizers and pesticides. The announcement comes ahead of Buy Ontario, Buy Canadian Day, taking place on June 27, 2025.
“Ontario wineries are producing great-tasting, top-quality wines,” said Stephen Crawford, Minister of Public and Business Service Delivery and Procurement. “They are earning praise around the world and beating out wine-producing giants in international competitions.”
VQA certification, governed by the Ontario Wine Appellation Authority (OWAA), serves as a guarantee of origin, quality, and authenticity. Each wine undergoes lab testing, auditing, and label verification before receiving the VQA designation.
“This expansion is great news for our growers and wineries,” said Trevor Jones, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness. “It comes at a time when the market is modernizing and there’s a growing appetite for local, sustainable products.”
In 2024, over $433.6 million in VQA wines were sold globally.
Derek Cartlidge, Chair of OWAA, called the update a “historic expansion” that offers greater flexibility for winemakers and responds to evolving climate and consumer demands. “It supports sustainability and opens the door to more authentic, high-quality wines across Ontario,” he said.
Sam Oosterhoff, MPP for Niagara West, emphasized the local impact. “This means more jobs and bigger paycheques. It’s a win for farmers, a win for sustainability, and a win for everyone who enjoys world-class Ontario wine.”
Ontario’s grape and wine industry contributes significantly to the provincial economy, particularly in wine regions such as Niagara, Prince Edward County, and Lake Erie North Shore. The addition of new VQA-approved grape varieties is expected to further fuel growth, innovation, and international recognition.
