The City of Brantford will activate four new red light cameras on July 1 as part of its expanding efforts to reduce serious traffic collisions and improve road safety.
The move builds on the city’s red light camera program launched in 2023 and targets intersections with a history of high collision rates. The new cameras will be installed at:
• Lynden Road at Wayne Gretzky Parkway
• West Street at Fairview Drive
• Dunsdon Street at Park Road North
• King George Road at Charing Cross/Queensway Drive
“These locations were selected based on traffic safety data, including collision frequency and severity,” the city said in a statement.
Red light cameras automatically capture vehicles that enter intersections after the signal has turned red. Each violation triggers two images: one as the vehicle crosses the stop line, and another as it proceeds through the intersection. Offences are reviewed by provincial offence officers, and if confirmed, a $325 ticket is mailed to the vehicle’s registered owner.
City officials say the program is intended to deter red light running, a dangerous driving behaviour linked to severe injuries and fatalities.
“It is both unsafe and illegal to enter an intersection after the light has turned red,” the city noted. “This program is designed to reduce aggressive driving and improve safety for all road users, including pedestrians and cyclists.”
The initiative is part of Brantford’s broader traffic safety strategy and reflects a growing trend among Ontario municipalities adopting automated enforcement to address risky driving habits.
