The City of Brantford has assumed responsibility for the Park Patrol program, a long-running initiative aimed at promoting safety and by-law compliance in local parks and trails.

Previously operated by Brantford Police Services, the program officially transitioned to the city’s By-law Department in May. The move is administrative in nature, with no impact on the program’s budget or additional financial cost to residents.

“For 40 years, the Park Patrol program has helped foster a sense of safety and community pride in our outdoor spaces,” said Mayor Kevin Davis. “Maintaining a visible presence in parks and trails ensures everyone feels welcomed, respected, and supported.”

Patrollers are tasked with enforcing a wide range of by-law infractions, including the use of motorized vehicles in parks, public consumption of alcohol or cannabis, illegal dumping, property damage, and after-hours park use. They also assist with animal control concerns, monitor fireworks use, and coordinate with housing outreach teams regarding encampments.

City patrollers currently work in teams of four from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Beginning Saturday, June 21, they will shift to a 2 p.m. to midnight schedule through the end of August. Patrol areas include parks, trails, school yards, and other municipally owned outdoor spaces. Patrollers also use motorcycles to access off-road areas.

Brantford Police Chief Jason Saunders said the department fully supports the transition.

“While the program is now under the City’s By-law Department, Brantford Police Service remains committed to supporting efforts that keep our public spaces safe and welcoming,” Saunders said.

Residents are encouraged to report by-law violations by calling 519-759-4150 or online at Brantford.ca/Bylaw.
