The City of Brantford is calling on residents and local business owners to have their say in the development of a new, unified Climate Change Action Plan aimed at guiding the city toward net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
The updated plan will consolidate Brantford’s previous Corporate and Community Climate Change Action Plans, first adopted in 2019 following the City’s climate emergency declaration. With the impacts of climate change becoming increasingly evident, municipal officials say public input is essential to ensure the plan aligns with local priorities.
“Updating the City’s Climate Change Action Plans is a critical step in ensuring Brantford remains resilient in the face of a changing climate,” said Rebecca Szczepanowski, Supervisor of Policy and Sustainability with the City of Brantford. “We’re asking members of the community to share their ideas, priorities, and perspectives so that we can ensure this updated Plan continues to reflect the values and needs of our community.”
Residents can complete an online survey at LetsTalkBrantford.ca/ClimateAction before 4:30 p.m. on Friday, July 31, 2025. Survey participants will be entered into a prize draw, with the chance to win one of three $50 gift cards for local eco-conscious products and services. Prizes must be claimed at Brantford City Hall with valid photo ID.
In addition to the online engagement, the City will be gathering feedback in person at community events and local facilities throughout the summer, including the Canada Day celebration at Lions Park Steve Brown Sports Complex on Tuesday, July 1.
Since launching its initial plans, Brantford has introduced several initiatives to reduce emissions, including:
• Converting all streetlights to LED technology
• Creating a Net-Zero Building Standard for new municipal buildings
• Conducting a Transit Optimization Study
• Rolling out a city-wide green bin program
• Expanding the city’s tree canopy
• Planning for low- and zero-carbon municipal fleets and buildings
In 2024, Brantford became one of only 75 municipalities in Canada to complete all five milestones of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ Partners for Climate Protection (PCP) framework for both corporate and community streams.
