The Brantford Police Service (BPS) has officially begun the rollout of body-worn cameras for its front-line officers, marking a major step toward enhanced transparency, accountability, and public trust in local policing.

The deployment of the chest-mounted cameras began this week and is expected to be fully implemented across the force by the end of 2025. The initiative is being funded through a provincial grant aimed at helping police services leverage technology to improve community safety.

The cameras will be used during public interactions, including traffic stops, enforcement duties, and responses to service calls. Each device includes a visible light indicator to signal when recording is in progress. Officers are required to follow strict protocols for when the cameras must be activated or deactivated, and all footage will be securely stored in line with legal standards and privacy regulations.

“These cameras will offer an objective record of police interactions, assist in gathering evidence for investigations, and serve as a tool to reinforce accountability for both officers and the public,” the Brantford Police Service said in a statement.

The move aligns with the recommendations issued by the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario and adheres to the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. All handling of video content — from collection to disclosure — will be governed by the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (MFIPPA).

Brantford Police say the adoption of body-worn cameras demonstrates their ongoing commitment to professional and community-focused service, while also responding to public calls for greater transparency in law enforcement.

The implementation joins a growing trend across Canada as police services look to rebuild trust and improve safety outcomes through the responsible use of modern technology.
