A 34-year-old Brantford man is facing a dozen charges after police seized a loaded handgun, suspected fentanyl and cocaine, and a large sum of cash during a downtown patrol.

The arrest took place around 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 14, when members of the Brantford Police Service’s Core Engagement and Response Team (CERT) observed a dispute between two individuals outside a Queen Street location.

While speaking with the individuals, officers spotted what appeared to be a firearm in the possession of one of the men. Police say it was later confirmed to be a loaded .22 calibre handgun. The man was arrested at the scene.

A search incident to arrest uncovered a significant quantity of suspected fentanyl and cocaine, as well as a large amount of currency. Investigators also determined the man did not have a valid firearms licence.

He now faces multiple charges, including unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a restricted firearm with ammunition, possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking, and possession of a firearm with an altered serial number. The full list includes 12 offences.

The accused was held for a bail hearing.

CERT is a proactive policing unit made up of officers and special constables focused on addressing crime and disruptive behaviour in Brantford’s downtown core. Police say the unit enhances frontline capacity and supports community safety across the city.
