The City of Brantford has temporarily removed the ‘Welcome Sculpture’ from the Brantford and Area Sports Hall of Recognition to undergo critical conservation work, the City announced Tuesday.
The sculpture, which portrays a young female hockey player tying her skates, has suffered significant wear and structural deterioration over the years. Unlike other city sculptures cast in bronze, this piece was created using composite materials such as fiberglass, Bondo, and paint to simulate a bronze finish—materials that are more vulnerable to damage from prolonged exposure and physical interaction.
According to city officials, the damage is not the result of a single incident but has accumulated over time. Despite clear signage asking visitors not to lean or climb on the statue, the figure has become a popular photo spot for guests, resulting in frequent handling. Experts note that repeated physical contact, including from skin oils and pressure, can accelerate deterioration.
The restoration will be carried out by a professionally accredited conservator from Conservation of Sculptures, Monuments, & Objects, a nationally recognized firm specializing in the preservation of public art. The conservation process is expected to take several months.
The ‘Welcome Sculpture’ was originally donated to the City in 2013 by Brant Mutual Insurance. Funding for the conservation work is being generously provided by Paul Aucoin of Aucoin Investments Inc.
“We understand how meaningful this sculpture is to the community and visitors to the Sports Hall,” said a spokesperson for the City’s Economic Development, Tourism and Cultural Initiatives Department. “We appreciate the public’s patience as we take the necessary steps to preserve this important piece for future generations.”
The City will notify the public once the sculpture is returned to its home at the Sports Hall. In the meantime, residents are reminded to help protect public art by refraining from touching, sitting, or climbing on installations.
