Grand Erie Public Health (GEPH) is alerting residents to a potential measles exposure at Valley Heights Secondary School – Turning Point, located at 2561 Highway 59 South in Langton. The possible exposure occurred on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, between 6:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m.
GEPH warns that individuals born in or after 1970 who have not received two doses of a measles-containing vaccine and have never had a measles infection may be at risk of contracting the virus if they were present at the location during the specified time.
To help mitigate the risk of infection, public health officials recommend the following:
• MMR (measles-mumps-rubella) vaccine may help prevent infection if administered within 72 hours of exposure.
• Immunoglobulin treatment may be available within six days of exposure for individuals at higher risk, such as infants, pregnant individuals, and people with weakened immune systems.
Anyone who was at the location during the exposure period or believes they may have been exposed to measles elsewhere in the community is urged to complete GEPH’s measles exposure form at www.geph.ca/measlesform. The information provided will be used for risk assessment and to offer appropriate public health guidance.
Measles is a highly contagious viral illness that spreads through coughing and sneezing and can lead to serious complications, particularly in vulnerable populations. Symptoms typically appear 7 to 21 days after exposure and may include high fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes, and a blotchy rash.
- More information about signs, symptoms, and what to do after a possible exposure is available on the public health websites: www.bchu.org/measles and www.hnhu.org/measles.
