What began as a deeply personal experience for Brantford resident Ruby Streicher has grown into a community-wide celebration of compassion and sustainability. On Saturday, May 3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Streicher will host the second annual Love Mom Clothing Exchange at the Brantford Polish Hall, 154 Pearl Street—a free event offering women the chance to “shop” for clothing and accessories at no cost.

The idea was born from Streicher’s own lived experience. “Eight years ago, I became a single mom, and suddenly every dollar had to stretch further than ever before,” she says.

“There was nothing left for me, but other women—strangers—lifted me up through clothing exchanges and quiet acts of generosity. That support carried me through”, she added.

Moved by that kindness and the sense of dignity it preserved, Streicher founded the Love Mom Clothing Exchange in 2024 to give back.

The inaugural event exceeded expectations, drawing strong community turnout and donations. “The response was overwhelming,” she says. “We didn’t know what to expect, but the support was incredible.”

This year’s edition has already sparked a wave of goodwill. “The impact I’m seeing is joy, kindness, and gratitude,” Streicher notes.

“Every post I share about this event on social media cuts through the noise and spreads something positive”, she explained.

The exchange is open to all women, regardless of income level, and no registration is required. Donations of gently used women’s clothing, accessories, and footwear are welcome and can be dropped off between 10 a.m. and noon on the day of the event.

Pick-ups can also be arranged by contacting Streicher.

A former project manager and soon-to-be real estate agent, Streicher moved to Brantford in 2021 and was immediately drawn to the city’s community spirit.

“This isn’t about giving back from a place of having more,” she says. “It’s about creating a space where everyone can participate in lifting each other up. Kindness is contagious—and so is its absence. If I don’t extend it, the ripple ends with me”, she said.

Beyond meeting immediate clothing needs, the exchange also promotes environmental awareness. By giving clothing a second life, the event helps divert items from landfills and reduces reliance on fast fashion.

“Anyone who wants or needs women’s clothing will benefit,” Streicher says. “Whether it’s for practical reasons or simply the joy of sharing, everyone is welcome. This is about people, the planet, and the community.”
