The Brantford Police Service is alerting local businesses and residents following a spike in reports of counterfeit Canadian currency circulating in the city.
As of this year, officers have received 52 reports involving counterfeit $100 and $50 bills. In response, five individuals have been charged in connection with these incidents.
Police say many of the counterfeit $100 bills being used share common serial numbers, including GRJ6710018 through GRJ6710022. These notes are often marked with the phrase “Prop Money” on the holographic security strip. Authorities have also noted signs of discoloration and ink that peels from the surface of the counterfeit bills.
To help identify counterfeit currency, police advise checking that:
- The serial number is unique to each bill.
- The note does not include the words “Prop Money.”
- The ink does not scratch off easily.
- The raised ink on authentic bills can be felt by touch.
Anyone who suspects they have received a counterfeit bill is urged not to accept it and to report the incident to police immediately.
