A Brantford landlord has been fined for failing to meet fire safety requirements after a fire-related incident prompted an investigation by the Brantford Fire Department.

Balbir Panag, owner of Unit 6 at 379 Darling Street, pleaded guilty in Provincial Offences Court on April 3, 2025, to two violations of the Ontario Fire Code stemming from a December 3, 2023 incident at the property.

Panag was fined $295 plus court costs for failing to install a smoke alarm where required. A suspended sentence was issued for a second charge—failure to install a carbon monoxide alarm.

The Brantford Fire Department is reminding all landlords and property owners of their legal responsibility to ensure working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms are installed and maintained. Failure to comply can lead to significant fines or further legal action.

Anyone with questions or concerns about fire safety is encouraged to contact the Brantford Fire Department’s Fire Prevention Division at 519-752-0540 or visit www.brantfordfire.ca.
