The City of Brantford is moving forward with a series of major infrastructure improvements aimed at enhancing road safety, accommodating future growth, and strengthening connections for residents, commuters, and local businesses.

Several high-priority projects are set to begin this year across key corridors and pedestrian routes. While temporary traffic disruptions are expected, the long-term benefits include safer travel, improved accessibility, and more efficient infrastructure.

Among the cornerstone initiatives is the replacement of Brant’s Crossing Pedestrian Bridge. The new bridge will provide a safer, more accessible connection along the S.C. Johnson Trail and offer increased resilience to future flooding events. The project reflects the City’s ongoing efforts to improve recreational routes while protecting vital infrastructure.

Downtown Brantford will also see notable changes through the first phase of revitalization efforts. Upgrades to Icomm Drive, Brant Avenue, and Hill Street will include streetscape enhancements and traffic flow improvements, creating a more inviting space for residents, businesses, and visitors.

To address safety concerns in south Brantford, Tutela Heights Road will be permanently closed east of Davern Road. A new cul-de-sac will be constructed as part of slope stabilization work outlined in the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment. The measure is intended to mitigate risk and protect public safety.

Improvements are also coming to Conklin Road between Gillespie Drive and Mount Pleasant Road. The addition of a dedicated left-turn lane and surface upgrades are designed to improve traffic efficiency in this growing corridor.

Essential underground work is underway along Gilkison Street, where sanitary sewer upgrades will ensure reliable services for both current residents and future development. The project also preserves access to nearby community landmarks, such as Lions Park Arena.

Mount Pleasant Street and Mount Pleasant Road are the focus of a multi-year infrastructure overhaul between Beckett Drive and Conklin Road. The improvements will address aging road conditions and underground systems while supporting Brantford’s continued population and economic growth. Detours will be in place to keep traffic moving during construction.

Meanwhile, work on the Ava Road Bridge Rehabilitation Project is nearing completion, with the bridge expected to reopen this spring. Once finished, the bridge will restore a vital link for drivers, pedestrians, and transit users.

Pothole repairs are also ongoing across the city, with maintenance crews addressing damage caused by the freeze-thaw cycle of winter. More than 600 potholes have been repaired so far, with crews working continuously to maintain safe driving conditions in compliance with Ontario’s Maintenance Standards.

The City is urging residents, businesses, and commuters to plan ahead during construction periods by using alternate routes where possible and checking for updates at Brantford.ca/RoadClosures. While temporary inconveniences are anticipated, the improvements underway aim to ensure a safer, more efficient transportation network for years to come.
